This Week's Random Thought: Say NO to Pre-Orders
Nowadays, many dolls can be found marked down later. Of course there are always 1 or 2 dolls that are must haves but if there are other dolls you are not sure about and they don't "scream" at you, then consider stepping back and waiting. It is very true that patience is a virtue and good things come to those who wait. The secondary market is something people don't always like, but it does exist and if you really want something but missed out, consider looking around. Usually secondary market prices stabilize once a regular release has been out for a few weeks.
The only exception to my no more pre-order rule is exclusives. Obviously if there is an exclusive that is a must-have, then by all means, pre-order.
I believe the days of seeing entire collections sell-out are over. Way over. So do not kick yourself when you pre-order and then pay full price for a doll, only to find it on sale 2 months after it has been released.
A few years ago one company always seemed to be cranking out product and then turning around and offering a few current items they had in their warehouse for sale to dealers at very low prices. Suddenly this company had alot of product and I began hearing from my customer base that they were going to stop pre-ordering and just wait for a doll to go on sale. Gee, why should I even bother trying to sell this company's doll lines? And to be honest, I couldn't blame my customers for waiting to get dolls on sale.
At this point in time, I do not see any "hot" doll lines. Maybe an individual hot doll here or there, but with the way the economy is today, please by savvy about your dolly dollars and consider thinking about stepping back from preorders and waiting for that sale. I do believe its is a strong buyers market and that is great news for a patient customer.
What do you all think about giving up on Pre-orders? Yay or Nay?
Mary, I really appreciate your doing this blog for collectors and the insight you're offering here. Thank you.
